We decided just to try the introductory McDonalds Attack at Bautzen scenario from rules which is actually quite large even when playing the small version.
I took Russian defenders and Stephen the French.
Scenario slightly amended with rule update in that the opposing Artillery Brigades no longer generate an ADC each (making it more appealing to attach batteries to other Brigades) so I had 4 ADCs the French 5.
We did have couple of issues with charges and supports (convoluted rather than complex at times) and in particular with Skirmisher shooting when faced by more than one target (we decided that like Volley fire the skirmishers split any casualties caused across targets in their zone).
We played 8 out of 16 turns with some turns being rather slow as we had to refresh rule memory but overall enjoyed what GDA brings to the table ie a nice period flavoured set that just sort of feels right but getting used to no saves or much in the way of rallying hits took a bit of getting used to as combat/shooting results can be brutal.
It is much slower (not aided by re-learning processes) than something like Field of Battle or Black Powder but for the large Divisional sized game its designed for it works well.
A timely outing as GDA game being planned for next UWS meeting by David S (Dennewitz scenario I believe converted from GDB) and best that players have some knowledge of rules.
Great looking game. Sounds like the rules worked for you.
ReplyDeleteA good set of rules for the period which would doubtless get quicker with repeated play, unlikely in our case.
DeleteI gave up after 1 turn when I tested them out; it just seemed like far to many steps to do everything. Good rules if you MUST have an explanation of why everything happened as it did. I'd have to play with someone else familiar with the rules to tackle them again.
ReplyDeleteCertainly more process to go through than with FOB but I do like the core game. More tactical detail and with some nice period specific touches. It does flow better once you get it inside the old gray matter. Not as flexible in scope as FOB or BP but works fine at its Divisional level.
